Backpacks And A Wine Key

Wandering winos on a pilgrimage to nowhere searching for a glass that is more than half full.

The Retirement Road Less Traveled

We were talking to a friend the other day. She wants to retire, quit work and do other things. We talk at length of the ins and outs of life changes, what we want, what she wants, what it took for us, decisions, challenges, ups and downs, hopes and dreams. Options. We...

Pilgrim Life – Are we conditioned to pick the easy path

I want to be a person that, for no reason at all, will sometimes take the harder path without there needing to be a benefit. I want to seek the longer path. But, what’s maybe more important is I want to consciously brake the conditioning that makes me always take the easier way, the path of least resistance, simply by default. I want to think about it. I want to at least consider taking the harder path sometimes without it feeling like I’m breaking some hard wired rule.

My useless attempt at travel blogging – Todos Santos

Todos Santos is really cool. It has a great vibe, incredible food, good beaches and it would be easy to get lost there for a couple days or a couple years.

Random thoughts and mostly useless observations on the Camino de Santiago

Here are only a few of my observations and random thoughts – with some explanation if I feel like it – on our experience walking the Camino de Santiago.

No substitutions, please.

Hi.  Yes, I’m ready to order.  I’d like your double-cut pork chop with apple sauce, but instead of the braised cabbage, I’d like steamed broccoli.  And, rather than the shredded potatoes, may I have a house salad with ranch dressing on the side?...

I hate digital photography

Regarding travel photography, seriously, what is the deal with the picture taking?  As we stood on the platform to catch our train to Rome some time ago, a platform that was amazingly small in a train station that was puny in a hill town that...

Perspective on coronavirus

Warning: Totally irreverent #coronapocalypse perspective in 3, 2, 1... I think it’s noteworthy that there is a swelling of questioning, lecturing, and anger being directed generally at young people in America by the Boomer generation (and others, to be fair)...

Travel Blog – Oktoberfest and Munich

The day started out like so many others in my past. I woke to the sound of the phone alarm clock sounding at 7am (still 11pm at home and in the heart of your hero, having been in country only a day or so now) and had to resist the urge to throw the damn thing...

Minimalists’ guide to collecting wine

Minimalists’ guide to collecting wine

Sorry, but for a post about minimalism, this is going to be surprisingly long… I’ve been working on this minimalism thing for a while now. You know, simplify – own less and make sure your possessions don’t own you? It seemed easy and exciting at first, and has been a...

My new theory on the popularity of pro football

I have a new theory about professional football. I think the popularity of NFL football is now being completely supported by the gambling trends of weekly and yearly Fantasy Football leagues. It's a new theory, and I'm just developing it now, but it feel right....

Notes On Failure – As We Start Pilgriming

Notes On Failure – As We Start Pilgriming

I don’t want to fail at this. It’s funny, I think I have reached a place in my life, through experience as well as through elements of privilege (money and health, etc) where the outside world is not what challenges me any more. It’s all inside We’ve chosen our first...

I Fucking Hate Travel Blogging – A Disclaimer

I Fucking Hate Travel Blogging – A Disclaimer

I'll make this brief and simply attach it to everything I write. I fucking hate travel blogging. I’m not good at it and I’m not trying to be good at it. I’m not a travel agent. I’m not a tour guide. I’m not TripAdvisor and I have no interest in developing itineraries...
